phpVMS Alternative

The hosted phpVMS alternative

Love what phpVMS does but tired of running your own server? vAirOps gives you a modern virtual airline platform - hosted, with free ACARS built in - so you can skip the install, hosting and maintenance entirely.

Why people look for a phpVMS alternative

Self-hosting is a chore

phpVMS is open-source and free at the core, but you have to install it, run a server, keep PHP and Laravel updated, and handle backups and security - forever. Many VA owners would rather fly than be a sysadmin.

Installation can be painful

The phpVMS v7 installer is a recurring source of frustration in the community (the installer loop, the Step 3 error), and paid install services exist precisely because of it.

No flight tracking out of the box

phpVMS does not track flights on its own. You add a separate ACARS client - the official vmsACARS is a paid one-time license, or you wire up a third-party like smartCARS.

Effectively single-language

phpVMS is built around one install language; offering a real multilingual experience to pilots means serious customization.

How vAirOps solves it

  • Hosted, zero setup - create your VA from the web in minutes. No server, no installer, no updates to babysit.
  • OpsLink ACARS built in and free - for MSFS and X-Plane, with no FSUIPC. Flight tracking works on day one.
  • Server-side anti-cheat scoring - time-acceleration and teleport detection, landing and flight-rule scoring, all evaluated on the server.
  • 6-language interface (EN, TR, DE, ES, FR, RU) for both the web panel and the pilot app.
  • Modern out of the box - live map, badges, tours, hour-based ranks, SimBrief dispatch and multi-VA, with no third-party modules to hunt down.

When phpVMS is still the right call

phpVMS is genuinely great if you want full control, open-source code and the freedom to run and customize everything yourself - and you do not mind being your own host and admin. vAirOps is for everyone who would rather skip all of that and just run their airline. It is a different platform, not a phpVMS fork, so plugins and themes do not carry over and any data migration is manual.

phpVMS Alternative FAQ

Is there a hosted alternative to phpVMS?

Yes. vAirOps is a fully hosted virtual airline platform - you create and run your VA from the web with no server to install or maintain, unlike self-hosted phpVMS. It also includes the free OpsLink ACARS flight tracker built in.

Is there a free phpVMS alternative?

phpVMS core is free but you still pay for hosting and a separate ACARS. vAirOps is EUR 14.99/month with unlimited pilots and a free trial, and the OpsLink ACARS pilot app is free. For many VAs the hosted total cost is similar to or less than self-hosting phpVMS once you add hosting and ACARS.

What is the difference between phpVMS and vAirOps?

phpVMS is open-source software you host and maintain yourself, with no built-in flight tracking. vAirOps is a hosted platform with the free OpsLink ACARS, server-side anti-cheat and a 6-language interface built in - no setup or maintenance. phpVMS gives you full control; vAirOps gives you a ready-to-run airline.

Can I migrate my phpVMS data to vAirOps?

vAirOps is a separate platform, not a phpVMS fork, so phpVMS plugins and themes do not transfer and data migration is manual and limited. In exchange you drop all the self-hosting, updates and maintenance.

Does vAirOps support MSFS and X-Plane like phpVMS ACARS?

Yes. The built-in OpsLink ACARS supports Microsoft Flight Simulator and X-Plane with no FSUIPC required. With phpVMS you would set up vmsACARS or smartCARS separately.
